National Survey on Learning Outcomes Assessment Launched
March 10th, 2009
Chief academic officers from all regionally accredited two- and four-year colleges and universities in the United States have been invited to participate in a survey that will provide an informed perspective on the current state of student learning outcomes assessment at the collegiate level. The survey is being conducted by the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA), co-located at Indiana University and the University of Illinois.
Several higher education associations including the American Council on Education and other groups forwarded early alerts to campuses emphasizing that while participation in the survey is voluntary and responses will remain confidential, the results promise to be useful to individual campuses and to the national discourse about outcomes assessment and accountability. NILOA is led by George Kuh from Indiana University and Stan Ikenberry from the University of Illinois and is supported by grants from several foundations.
Established in 2008, NILOA assists institutions and others in discovering and adopting promising practices in the assessment of college student learning outcomes. Documenting what students learn, know and can do is of growing interest to colleges and universities, accreditation groups, higher education associations, and others. NILOA's mission is to discover and disseminate ways in which academic programs and institutions can productively use assessment data to inform and strengthen undergraduate education and communicate with the American public. In addition to surveys, NILOA will glean data from web sites of institutions, accrediting groups, higher education associations, and others. Case studies will be conducted that identify promising assessment practices. A series of working papers addressing key issues in learning outcomes assessment and productive use of data will be forthcoming.
So, please return to the NILOA website frequently. To be placed on NILOA mailing list.....Click on “Join Our Email List." To see a copy of the survey, click this link: NILOA survey questionnaire.
"These findings squarely address the most critical, fundamental challenges facing higher education today--what colleges and universities are doing to assess and enhance the knowledge, skills and competencies students need to meet the growing demands of the workplace and function effectively in a global economy…”
