“Coming Clean”: Rebuilding the public trust

This panel presentation brought the perspective of different higher education experts together to reflect on the need for transparency in the current accountability climate. The panel was convened by Dr. Paul Gaston, one of four authors of the Degree Qualifications Profile (DQP). Panelists included Dr. Debra Humphreys of the Lumina Foundation, Dr. Mary Ellen Petrisko, president of the WASC Senior College and University Commission, Dr. Aaron Thompson, interim president of Kentucky State University and Dr. Natasha Jankowski, Director of NILOA. Dr. Jankowski’s main focus was transparency in learning outcomes as a helpful tool not only for students but for higher education in its entirety.

NILOA’s Senior Scholar, Dr. Paul Lingenfelter, particularly noticed a dialogue regarding accreditation institutions clarifying assessment standards and expectations. Although Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) is helpful on this front, “achieving coherence across higher education remains a big challenge” says Dr. Lingenfelter.

While each of the panelists brought their own unique perspectives to the conversation around transparency, it was clear that there was a shared need to better tell our stories as institutions focused on learning.

"The complex, diverse learning goals, of postsecondary education do not justify a passive approach to student achievement. It is heartening to see state policy and institutional leaders working together to collect evidence of student learning and pursue continuous improvement."
